With our gear loaded in the Tahoe, Kevin, Diane, me and my sister Susan, rode off to let Sylvia and my nephew John sleep in and catch us 30 miles down the road. We flew for 30 miles then Kevin took the drivers seat and John and Sylvia started biking. After another enjoyable 25 miles Kevin showed up with lunch. We picnicked on burgers and fries. Shortly a familiar cyclist appeared on a Cervelo. It was a Ride of Hope Canadian doing his extra miles. He had ridden 25 miles back from Pierre. As slender as his bike frame, training for a high mileage supported tour from Atlanta to Portland, ME, he told us where the Canadians were going to be hanging out that night. We topped off his water bottles gave him some Gatorade then he blazed off back towards Pierre. We made it to the dam visitor center for Lake Oahe then stopped for water. Quizzing the staff member inside we found out that Oahe (Oh wa he) means ‘lookout point’ in Lakota and that we had one more hill to climb to make it to Pierre. OMG it was a big hill steep at the bottom and everlasting. I found a diver down flag on the side of the road. Kevin escorted us to our hotel with the Tahoe. John had gone 56 miles a personal best. Susan did the whole 94 miles.
What a great day it was!
