Wow, a day for the record books. First thing this morning the phone rings its Kevin saying we need to run down and see this…over Lake Erie were 4 waterspouts (tornadoes when on land). Watch the video. Then we got to the town of Ashtabula in time to see the bridge raise at 9am (it raises every half hour). Then we stopped at a roadside park and scared off a deer that was eating apples. We all tried the green apples. They were small, tart and good. Later we had soft serve raspberry ice cream cones to reward ourselves after difficult hill climb. Then we had blackberries from a roadside stand. We enjoy great salads for lunch. The roads were nice with good shoulders, rolling hills, lots of trees. In Erie, PA, we enjoyed getting lost in a fabulous neighborhood filled with massive trees and massive houses. We saw a house(now a museum) made of very dark, almost black, stones; very Addams Family. Sylvia and I took pictures with one of the city’s fiberglass decorated frog statues while others read about Erie’s involvement in the Civil War. We decided that sometimes getting off route is a good thing. Then while cranking our way through vineyards towards our Barcelona destination, we spotted the Mazza Vineyard opened for wine tasting, of course we came to a screeching halt. For $2 we got to sample 6 wines each. Even though I don’t care much for wine it was fun. We all kicked in an extra buck in to taste their famous ice wine. Ice wine is only made in this region. To make it they leave the grapes on the vine till mid December. The grapes dry out and become raisins then hopefully stay frozen till picked at below 17 degrees F. They will spoil if it gets warm. Then the winery gets only a drop or two out of each raisin to make the wine. Needless to say it’s a very expensive wine. It’s also a very sweet wine. Before leaving we bought a bottle of their port and a bottle of their fruity Pink Catawba a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon with if you look closely you can spot them in the picture at the NY state line. You all missed a banner day.

Dear Tim -
ReplyDeleteAllyson, here ... Kevin's cousin, holding down the fort (and Petey) here in Stillwater while Kevin rides ... You stayed with my folks in Whitefish. I sure am going to miss your blog. Your blog is beautiful! Your wonderful writing makes me feel as if I'm there with you. (I am, I guess, every day!) I enjoy what you see off the beaten path, and take delight in your sense of humor. Be strong, be safe. Thanks again!
Those water spouts are amazing. Was that safe?
