On the Peace Bridge

Kamla in Canada without her passport

Sylvia and Kamla at Niagara Falls

We came into downtown Buffalo just as the sky started to darken on the horizon. Our route was blocked by, of all things, a bicycle race in progress. After getting asked by an upset racer if we had a 9 speed rear wheel he could use to replace his flat, we asked directions to the nearest hotel then hightailed it to the Adam’s Mark Hotel. A couple of the more effective red-light runners (its Sunday) made it just as the drops started to fall. We all placed our bikes under an awning and snuck into the hotels cafĂ©/bar to wait out the storm. It was a gully washer but after lunch and blogging another hour or two we headed to the peace bridge to cross into Canada. We had to buzz to have a gate opened so we could wheel the bike BOB combos through, then we got to ride on the sidewalk over the bridge past all the cagers stuck in the traffic. At the Canadian gate the officer checked our passports/ID’s. Kamla had left hers at home but it is being overnighted to Niagara Falls on the US side. We asked the officer whether Kamla would be able to cross back with only a driver’s license. He responded, “They can’t keep you from entering your own country.” At the first bar we had to stop and sample the local beer. With a hearty “SOCIALIZING” (standard Canadian toast) we toasted our accomplishment of officially adding international to our bike ride. We took it easy and made it to the falls just at sunset. Another great day on the bike.
