After being drained by the heat the day before we headed out nice and early; some of us getting to McDonalds before it opened at 6am. 15 miles down the road at Nashua I made a pit stop at the local bar (the only establishment open) and had a coke visiting with the 8 or 10 local guys that were hanging out drinking coffee and solving the world‘s problems. I mentioned that I was traveling with 5 others and two Louisianans were riding through too. When Kevin, Rick and Bill stopped by the bar they mentioned that one of the Louisianans was a Psychiatrist. This really primed the pot with the 2nd amendment T-shirt wearing throng. When Pat got there he was blindsided. The first words out of a locals mouth, “I bet you’re a Psychiatrist.”. “I think Psychiatrist’s prescribe too much medicine.” The verbal melee was on. Pat had a blast fending off conservatives right and left talking about CO2 emissions and cow flatulence. His buddy Dave retired outside to listen to muffled voices of the boisterous debaters assured his friend had matters in well in hand. Pat was aglow with the triumphant when we saw him arrive in Wolf Point spreading tales of his victory sipping a bourbon and coke. While our clan split $6 pitchers of bud light delighting that we were able to make his day.
A little more about the Louisiana Boys. We met them early one morning eating breakfast at the Isaac Walton Inn. On the climb up Marias Pass I caught up with Pat. Pat is a Psychiatrist by profession though it is hard to picture him calmly sitting and listening to other peoples problems. He is outgoing, fun loving, raw, enjoys lively discussions, but most of all he is a wordsmith on par the southern journalist and author Rick Bragg. His blog is http://patanddavesbiketrip.blogspot.com/. Dave on the other hand is polar opposite. He is soft spoke, reflective, and well mannered, contemplative, and doesn’t crave the spotlight. Not what you’d expect for a practicing attorney.
