Malts in Garrison
We chowed down on breakfast at the Parshall cafĂ© then hit the road. We stopped for pictures in a bright yellow field we later learned was blooming canola, and later for a field of bright purple flowers we learned to be flax. The clouds cleared and with a slight crosswind we headed east. We stopped for lunch of tortillas with peanut butter and honey by a large lake and gave some attention to 4 curious grey horses with black stripes running down their backs. We headed on into the town of Garrison all in agreement that that had been the best 50 mile bike ride anyone had ever ridden. At Garrison we ate shakes at Ye Olde Malt Shoppe and went to the park to take photos with the giant walleye fish monument. We visited with people attending a family reunion at the park then headed another 10 miles east to Totten Trail Resort. Resort is a word but not an appropriate description for this establishment. The ‘proprietor’ was initially curmudgeonly and seemed put out by our presence. Clean showers and a nearby bar/diner for $10/tent was all we needed to know to decide to stay. ’Proprietor’ Kirk came around and befriended us after we ate his overcooked ribs. Even giving us four free drink coupons while we fed quarters into the pool table. After another small fire works display he even pointed out recommended routes to us and gave us a waterproof state map that had been hanging on the walls for years.
Hi Guys! Farmer John here from Wellman,Ia following you along the same route I took in "05. Just wondering how you could NOT be mesmerized by the "Hot" and "Cold" twin water towers of Garrison!! I have several pictures taken of mimed showers under each of them. The pork tenderloins were the best bet on the menu. The canola, flax, wheat, sunflowers and corn all added wonderful color to a rich pallette under that endless sky. Enjoy the ride! Keep up the good posts. And thanks!!
